Entering our apartment in Almaty

Notice the difference in the various height between steps? We saw that all over the city and forget being accessible to people with wheelchairs, etc. We were on the top floor, no elevator, I think it was the 4th or 5th floor.

Tht's funny one of those things you live all your life with but not notice until someone else points it out. I don't know how the lights on the staircases were where you lived, but normally the are out or non existant, and that last step in the dark was always telling me it's the ast step so I don't step in a void and fall down. now, we never lived in an apartment, but whenever we'd go visit, that's how I know I'm at the bottom of a staircase:) I'm trying to think of anyone in a wheelchair back when I was growing up, and I must ay i don't rememeber ever seeing one outside of a hospital. I spent a little while in a wheelchair in the hospital, but althought my walking was shaky and I coudln't walk more than a few steps I don't ever remmeber being given one outside of the hopital. (sorry I'm writing about my memories on your post)

Natalie, it's interesting to hear your perspective. I'm also going to post pictures of the inside when I get a chance. To us Americans, the outside of the Soviet style buildings were so stark and to some, they appeared scary especially when arriving in the middle of the night. I had to be careful with the steps since I'm so accident prone.
